Festival Life

Festivals are an essential element of Waldorf education. At WSNO, we celebrate seasonal festivals throughout the year, reflecting the natural cycles and rhythms of the world around us. These festivals are more than just celebrations; they are opportunities for the community to come together in gratitude, to connect with the earth, and to nurture the soul.

Throughout history, civilizations have marked important transitions and moments in the yearly cycle with rituals that honor nature's rhythms. In Waldorf education, this tradition continues with festivals that evoke the mood of each season through art, music, story, performance, and song. Reverence, ritual, and rhythm are integrated aspects of these celebrations, helping to establish the cadence of the year and infusing the school community with beauty and meaning.

Michaelmas

Autumn

Michealmas is celebrated early in the school year, close to the autumn equinox. Michael is a symbol of good triumphing over evil, courage over cowardice. The celebration of this holiday teaches the importance of facing fears and strengthening resolve. Each class assumes the same role that is passed down from grade to grade. As with so many traditions in Waldorf schools, this tradition becomes an exciting rite of passage.

Mardi Gras

Winter

Celebrating the carnival season and Mardi Gras is a cherished New Orleans tradition. Mardi Gras is a vibrant celebration of New Orleans' creativity, culture, hospitality, and indomitable spirit. At our school, we embrace this festive season each winter with lively music, handcrafted throws, delicious treats, and a shoebox parade. It's a time for our community to come together in the true spirit of Mardi Gras, sharing in the joy and exuberance that make New Orleans so special.

May Day

Spring

May Day is a beautiful festival honoring the changing of the seasons, marking the halfway points between the spring equinox and summer solstice. We celebrate this festival as a school community with flower crowns and maypole dances.
