The Waldorf School of New Orleans (WSNO) is seeking an energetic, caring, and dependable Long-Term Substitute Teacher to support our Grade 7 class.
The ideal candidate enjoys working with children, brings flexibility and enthusiasm to the classroom, and is interested in learning more about Waldorf Education. Experience in education, teaching, childcare, or youth programming is preferred.
A long-term substitute plays an important role in maintaining continuity for students and families. Working closely with faculty and administration, the substitute will follow established lesson plans and curriculum while creating a warm, structured, and engaging learning environment.

The Waldorf School of New Orleans is an independent school serving children from Nursery through Grade 8. Our educational approach nurtures the whole child through academics, creativity, movement, practical work, and meaningful relationships.

Responsibilities
Classroom & Student Support
- Prepare Block Schedule, as well as all daily classes for students guided by the Waldorf Curriculum.
- Document student progress for each block and insist on the highest standards in all student work.
- Lead lessons and activities in a way that encourages student participation, curiosity, and engagement.
- Assign classwork and homework as appropriate.
- Adapt teaching approaches to meet the varied learning needs and styles of students.
- Maintain a well-managed, safe, and positive classroom environment.
- Establish clear expectations and a positive tone from the beginning of the school day.
- Build positive relationships and establish rapport with students.
- Supervise students during transitions and out-of-class activities, including hallways, playgrounds, and other school spaces.
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and welcoming learning environment.
- Communicate with faculty and administration regarding student needs, classroom concerns, and progress.
- Maintain appropriate student confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Follow the professional expectations outlined in the WSNO Employee Handbook.
Waldorf Education
- Demonstrate an interest in and willingness to learn about Waldorf Education and its approach to child development.
- Support the rhythms, routines, curriculum, and classroom practices established by the regular teacher.
- Participate in school activities and meetings as appropriate for the length and scope of the assignment.
- Support the school's mission, values, and commitment to educating the whole child.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Previous classroom, teaching, childcare, youth development, or educational experience preferred.
- Strong command of the English language.
- General competency across most academic subjects.
- Ability to quickly learn and remember students' names.
- Warm, flexible, friendly, and approachable.
- Strong classroom management and communication skills.
- Ability to establish trust and rapport with students quickly.
- Reliable, punctual, and dependable.
- Comfortable working with students across different age groups.
- Interest in Waldorf Education and willingness to learn about Waldorf pedagogy.
Requirements
Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree preferred
Experience: Teaching experience preferred; childcare or youth experience a plus
Language: English required
Waldorf Experience: Not required, but an interest in Waldorf Education is required
Background Check: Successful candidates must complete a background check.
